Conservation Projects

The Society has been responsible for many of the key conservation decisions made about Parkgate over the last 50 years. These are part of the core mission of the Society.

Some conservation Milestones

  • Parkgate Conservation Area established (1972).

  • Prevention of the Dee River Barrage between Gayton - Bagillt (1973) . This would have damaged the delicate ecosystem of the marshes.

  • Conservation of the character of the village, including the retention of Mostyn House buildings (2014), designation of Listed Buildings etc.

  • Refurbishment of the Donkey Stand, Parkgate (2016).

  • The Parkgate Heritage Trail with heritage plaques and information pamphlets (2018).

Conservation Projects in Progress

  • Our Vision of Parkgate: new information boards promoting the area. Working in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council to design and crowd source funding. This project has resulted in 7 boards being erected along the Parade and Station Road. You can find details of this project in our Community Projects section.

  • The Old Baths Viewing Platform project: working with Cheshire West and Chester Council to design and fund improvements to the Old Baths Recreational Areas. You can find details of this project in our Community Projects section.

  • Ongoing protection of the Green Belt

Community EVENTS

The KING’s Coronation

In May 2023 we celebrated the coronation of King Charles II with a street party in Mostyn Square, Parkgate. Trestle tables and benches were provided; bring your own food and drink. Entertainment and entrance was free!

The Queen’s Platinum Anniversary

In June 2022 Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. There were national events to celebrate her reign during the Platinum Jubilee Weekend of 2nd to 5th June 2022.

  • Parkgate Street Party: a community street party was held in Mostyn Square to celebrate the occasion. Planning for this was coordinated by the local councillor Martin Barker and his team. 200 seats were available during the afternoon of 3rd June.

  • Tree Planting: The Parkgate Society have supplied new trees to a Parkgate public space to commemorate the occasion. The location for these trees was to be part of the Old Baths project. Further details will be published on this site as they are made available.

Environmental Projects

The National Coastal Path:

Birkenhead to the Welsh Border, lengths BHW1 and BHW3

There has been an ongoing debate / public consultation about this proposed National Coastal Path route and in particular how it might impact public access rights to the marsh, both in theory and in practice. The Society submitted a representation to this consultation process. Subsequently the Minister of State made the decision to support the proposals for this section coastal path around Parkgate and down to the Welsh border.

Natural England have now approved a grant for the building of this new section of the Coastal Path route from The Boathouse to the Welsh border. The work to build this is being done by the Cheshire West and Chester Council and is due to complete in Spring 2024.

Mapping Local Footpaths and Bridleways

Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) maintain the “definitive map” of public footpaths and bridleways in the area. The Parkgate Society reviews this map and consults with CWAC about the Parkgate area paths recorded on the map. The Society is keen to hear of any local paths which are missing from this “definitive” public footpath map.

Maintenance of local footpaths

The Society keeps an informal watchful eye on the state of local footpaths and welcome comments from members to highlight problems.

You can find ordinance survey and street maps of local public footpaths is available at: https://footpathmap.co.uk/map/?zoom=13&lng=-3.08051&lat=53.29346, and of the Wirral Way at http://www.gps-routes.co.uk/routes/home.nsf/RoutesLinksCycle/wirral-way-walking-and-cycle-route#

Mosquito Monitoring Project

Mosquitos have long presented a great nuisance to Parkgate residents and visitors alike. We have been working with the RSPB and Cheshire West and Chester Council to provide some respite to the mosquito problem by regular clearing of drainage channels on the marsh, and the creation of several large ponds. This has improved the situation. We are hoping to add to this by adding another pond to the north of Parkgate beyond the Old Baths car park.

Details on our Mosquito Monitoring programme can be found on our Environmental Projects page.
